Heritage Sites in NSW and Victoria

Gold rush streetscapes, courthouses, gaols, homesteads and rail buildings, with the Beechworth precinct largely intact, including the courthouse where Ned Kelly was committed for trial in 1880. Protection runs on two systems: the State Heritage Register under the NSW Heritage Act 1977, and the Victorian Heritage Register under the Heritage Act 2017, with councils adding a Heritage Overlay on the Victorian side. Many sites are volunteer staffed and open limited days.

How this category is built

A heritage site appears in every town it services, not only the town it is registered in. That is why the town counts on this page add up to more than 5. Address and service area are held as separate facts, which is the whole reason a business on one side of the Murray is not invisible on the other.

Listings are marked up as LandmarksOrHistoricalBuildings in the structured data. Ordering comes from a quality score, and where it exists, promoted placement is boxed and labelled. How we handle advertising.

Questions about heritage sites

How many heritage sites are listed on LocalsKnow?

5 heritage sites across 5 towns, 3 in New South Wales and 2 in Victoria. A business appears in every town it services, not only the one it is registered in, so the town counts add up to more than the listing count.

Which towns have the most heritage sites?

Bonegilla with 1, Gundagai with 1, Junee with 1. Coverage starts on the border corridor and works outwards, so the ordering here reflects where the directory has been built out, not where the trade is busiest.

What schema type do heritage sites use, and why does that matter?

Every listing in this category is marked up as LandmarksOrHistoricalBuildings rather than a generic LocalBusiness. The type carries the properties that fit the business, so opening hours, service area and credentials are read as what they are. Marking a heritage site up as a generic business tells a search engine almost nothing, and it costs the rich result.

How is the order on these pages decided?

By a quality score built from profile completeness, whether the business has claimed its listing, and whether a licence has been checked against the state register. Rating breaks a tie. Payment does not enter it at any point, and any promoted slot is boxed, labelled, and kept out of the structured data.
