The Saturday problem on the border corridor
Weekend trade availability is thin in regional towns, and the numbers on this directory show where it is thinnest.
Most trade work in a regional town happens between 7am and 4pm on a weekday, which is exactly when most of the people who need it are at work.
That mismatch is not a complaint about tradespeople. It is a structural fact about a labour market where a business is often one or two people, and where Saturday work costs a penalty rate that a domestic customer will not always wear. But it does mean that "who is open Saturday" is one of the most useful things a directory can answer, and almost none of them do.
What the numbers show
Every locality and category page on this site carries a count of how many listings on that page publish Saturday hours. It is computed from the hours on the listings underneath it, not estimated, and it moves as businesses claim their listings and fill in a full week.
Two patterns show up consistently across the corridor.
Retail and food publish weekends. Trades mostly do not. A cafe in Dean Street publishes seven days without being asked. A plumber publishes a phone number and an ABN. That is not because the plumber never works Saturday, it is because a trade business does not think of its hours as a shopfront thing.
Emergency availability and Saturday hours are different products. A business that takes after hours call outs is not open Saturday in any normal sense. It is contactable at a loading. Both are useful and they are not the same, so the site counts them separately.
Why the gap exists in the data
A listing built from public sources gets hours only if the business published them. Most trade websites do not. That is the single biggest source of missing hours on this directory, and it is fixable in about two minutes by whoever owns the business.
It is also why a low Saturday count on a page is a statement about published hours, not about actual availability. The page says so.
If you are a trade business reading this
Publishing your hours, including the days you are closed, is the cheapest thing you can do to get more of the right calls and fewer of the wrong ones. "Closed Sunday" stops a phone call at 10am Sunday that was never going to become a job.
If you take after hours work, say what triggers the loading. The number of quotes that fall over at the invoice because nobody mentioned a weekend rate is not small.
Claim the listing, add the week, done. Here is how.
