Every cellar door in Rutherglen, and what each one actually offers

By The LocalsKnow desk · last reviewed

Rutherglen has more cellar doors per head than anywhere else in the country and almost every guide to it names the same four. This is all of them, with the part nobody prints: what a tasting costs, whether you can walk in, which days they are shut, and whether there is food. Compiled from what each winery publishes itself and last checked on the date below. We have not been to all of them and this is not a ranking. Order runs roughly from the Murray Valley Highway west of town, through the historic estates, and back to Main Street.

How this list was put together

The LocalsKnow desk ranked these by hand. Nobody paid to be on the list and nobody can pay to move up it. Where a position is arguable, the blurb says what tipped it. The ordering here is deliberately not the quality score used on the category pages, because a score cannot tell you which of two good operators to ring first.

The list is checked again every six months. If something has closed, changed hands or fallen off, tell us and it gets pulled at the next review rather than left sitting there.
