Rutherglen built its name on fortifieds, the King Valley on Italian varieties, Heathcote on shiraz and Tumbarumba on cool climate whites, so the district sets the style before the winemaker does. Tasting fees are normal now and usually waived on a purchase, and most doors close at 5pm.

Tumbarumba sits above 600 metres in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and grows some of the coolest climate wine in NSW. Softwood plantations and the mills below town are the biggest employer, alongside beef and fine wool. The rail trail through to Rosewood was the first of its kind to open in NSW.
